Very friendly and helpful. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable. Wide selection of high quality items. The are a bit on the pricey side, but it is worth money.

If you're not interested in getting certified, this is the place for you. The owner will not certify you unless you pass HIS NAUI test. He is not forthright with his schedule either. So, unless you have a lot of time on your hands, don't count on them. And don't expect him to give you credit for what you HAVE completed unless you pass HIS Naui test, even though NAUI's requirements are much different.
I'm going somewhere else to get certified.

Got certified through Ocean Gear with my 13 year old and had an amazing experience! They do require you to take their test to pass to make sure you are a SAFE and a well rounded diver. The test is the EXACT same as the NAUI'S test and the best part is you get to take it as many times as you'd like to make sure you pass! My 13 year old had no issues. The owners are extremely honest in what they expect, and are always friendly. If you're having difficulties they take the time to work with you to ensure you understand everything. The selection at their shop is awesome to, and you can't beat their program for a great value! We will be back getting more scuba gear!

While my husband has been more into diving over the years, and has purchased his gear here, I've been more of a basic snorkeler. After struggling with frustrating, uncomfortable Costco equipment on my last trip to Maui, we came back to Ocean Gear so I could pick up a nice mask and snorkel. John is an instructor first and foremost, so he deliberately walked me through fit and function. Left feeling secure with a comfy mask and adjusted snorkel. John has a lot of experience, so stay open to the opportunity to hear his lived wisdom.

John loves to teach and his passion shows through in every interaction! He cares about his students and makes sure they learn everything to increase their level of safety and knowledge. Took the Nitrox class and 2 two hour classes and 2 hours in the shop, was over and above expectations. I was really impressed with his level of knowledge and expertise. Highly recommend the shop and services.

My GF found this place to have our BCD and regulators serviced. John, Debbie, and John Jr were super friendly. John Jr was extremely helpful on finding the correct size mask and snorkel for my GF. He even showed us a cool trick to determine the correct size mask. They're knowledgeable and I noticed they patiently cater to every customer in the store.

Covid-19 safety: Typical rules, staff and customers wear masks, sanitizer at the front door, etc.

Overall impression: Friendly, knowledgable, and patient staff. Definitely will come back :)

I had the pleasure of supporting a family owned, local business here in Huntington Beach. I didn't need much just a well fitted, comfortable mask and snorkel. I came to the right place, super friendly and knowledgeable. Little John took the time to fit me appropriately and explain the difference between clear vs the black silicone. Their store has so much more to offer, from scuba equipment, repairs to lessons. They also lead environmental science programs for the students in this city.

I've come here a few times and every time the owners were always helpful, honest, and knowledgeable. Rentals are fair-priced, quick and easy, returns are convenient. All around great dive shop. Lots of selections for gear. I would recommend this shop to anyone in the area or coming this way.

I took 3 scuba tanks to get filled. 2 needed a visual, which they do in house. The other one Debbie pointed out that the tank was canceled. She checked it out closer and found out that another scuba shop made a mistake. She called the manufacturer and explained what had happened. They normally do not exchange any tanks, but she did her best and they gave me a great deal on a brand new 2022 tank with all the warranties. I have purchased items and air at Ocean Gear before and they are always super nice and spend time with scuba stories. I do know they care about their diver customers and want them to be safe.
