Visited Pa's today just as they were closing up. The staff were very friendly and served us as the last customers of the day. My partner had a fresh ham and salad roll and loved it. I tried a couple of their savouries (ham and cheese sausage roll and a chicken and veg pie) and they were pretty good. I am a pastry cook and a pretty hard marker...
We also shared a jam and cream donut which was absolutely delicious.
I didn't see any evidence of the earlier review questioning their hygiene. Looked ship shape to me!

I visited this place about a year ago and I haven't been back since. On the day I went I had the unenviable experience of witnessing a cafe that looked to me to be a health risk. Pa's is set up so customers can see the food preparation area. This can be good for business when such a view assures customers their delectable delights are prepared with the utmost care, consideration and cleanliness. This was not the case on that particular day.

My dad had just come out of hospital from having both his knees replaced. At this stage I thought a sweet, sugary sensation would be embraced more readily than the green smoothie his naturopath suggested would aid his recovery. I selected some tasty treats to order then waited patiently in line. This is where things started to go awry for this small bakery. Horror of horrors. An absolute plethora of flies buzzed around the baking station. I would like to point out at this stage that I am in no way whatsoever exaggerating.

My disgust in the scene unfolding before me prompted me to check out the floor. Not good. Bits of pastry lay around like shrapnel from a bomb that had just blasted. By this stage I was conducting an internal health appraisal of the bakery. So to check out the staff members, particularly those busily baking. Oh dear. Oily hair in their face. My Nana would have had an extremely stern word or two to say to these young chaps, for sure.

And so, my turn to pay arrived. So baffled and taken aback by the scene before me I paid and took my food, in somewhat of a daze, I suspect. Reality sank in as I drove home. I fairly quickly returned the goods, lodged my verbal complaint and got a full refund.

I don't like giving places horrid reviews such as this and all I can say is maybe this was a particularly bad day at Pa's, maybe my complaint spurred them to make some changes. I hope so. I will go in there again one day but I'll be keeping my eyes well and truly peeled.

Needed some bread and pastry type stuff to feed me over the weekend. Bought a fruit loaf, a sour dough loaf, a jam donut (only place in Ellenbrook that makes them!) and a steak & curry pie.

Fruit loaf is light, tasty and toasts well. Yum

Steak & curry pie was bloody deeeeelicious. Pastry was just right, not dry, not squishy.

I'll expect similar from the loaf and the donut.

This review is for the store in Ellenbrook (it doesn't show up and I've no idea how to add it)

Being just down the road from work Pa's is regular lunch stop for all of us.

Between myself and my staff Im sure we have pretty much tried everything they have. Their salads and continental rolls are great value and filled with everything. Their pastries are delicious (Im told as they are not GF) but they also do a small range of GF friands and will make GF rolls with advance notice.

The hedgehog and caramel slices will appear weekly at our work so are obviously a hit too!

Pas has really gone down hill since it was sold and the new owners have taken over. Yes, they have introduced a few new, Vietnamese dishes to the menu but several old favourites have disappeared. They no longer have gravy and mushy peas with their pies and chips. Their bread lines have been reduced. But worse of all, the food does not taste fresh. The cakes have a decidedly stale taste. I bought a packet of hedgehogs and had to throw them out because they were definitely stale. I had a lamington in the shop and it was far from fresh. Even the rice with the Vietnamese dishes has a 'yesterday's rice' taste. Horrors of horrors, I found a long, black hair in my Vietnamese dish. I could eat no more and have not been been back there since. Yes, the females serving in the shop, one Vietnamese and one from Egypt, are extremely friendly but that does not make up for the stale taste to the food. They have installed doors so shoppers cannot see into the back of the shop but you can still see the bakers working in front of the ovens. When Garry and Julie had the shop you could always see the bakers either taking trays of food out of the ovens or preparing a table of trays of food to go into the oven. Since the new owners have taken over I have not observed anyone taking food out of the ovens or putting food into the ovens.

The new owners have also decreased the opening hours, the shop now closes at 4.30 p m on weekdays instead of 6.00 pm.

My advice - definitely give it a miss, it is definitely not the same shop with the same standards of service and food.
