Opera Gallery

Opera Gallery is one of the best Art Galleries in Singapore.

They have an unmatched collection of art that varies from big names like Botero, Monet and Warhol to new and upcoming artist from the region. From Modernism to
Impressionism and from Contemporary art to Post-war. The combination of art periods and artist from various geographies is what makes it such a great gallery.

Ambience of the gallery is rather formal. Dark wooden floors, black/white and red walls. No frills, just art. It is true that the staff only pays attention to you based on your looks. Never judge a book by its cover, Opera Gallery, you can miss out on some money. I'm actually fine with it, because I'm just there to admire and I prefer to do that without somebody bothering me.

The art collecting scene in Asia has become increasingly vibrant over the past decade and the Opera Gallery has visibly benefitted from this trend. The first time I ventured into the gallery was back when I was 14 and it was still located in Takashimaya. Horrid experience with a rude member of staff who brushed me off - probably because I looked like I couldn't afford any paintings.

Now, a decade little, nothing much has changed in terms of the financial capability but I do enjoy looking through their collections. They've brought in a couple of works from my favourite artists - Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall and Salvador Dali just to name a few. More emphasis has been placed on the up and coming Chinese painters in the last few years - reflecting key trends in the art market.

Have met a few helpful and knowledgeable staff members over the years but overall, service is still lackluster unless you walk in with your hands adorned with diamond rings. Just you wait, Opera Gallery.

Opera Gallery is an art gallery featuring interesting works by artists from all over the world. Especially prominent are Chinese artists - with many fascinating art pieces being displayed. Opera Gallery provides a nice respite from busy Orchard Road - it is possible to just walk into the gallery and spend half an hour absorbing the art. Their curators are usually quite friendly - just ask them for information and help, and they are usually more than willing to provide you with answers.
